Superficialities

Why is social media inundated with superficialities? We talk about meals and movies, friends and music. We talk about the niceties of life. Are these our values? Are they what’s important to us? Why do they flood our conversation? Do we not want to talk about what’s important to us? Do we not know what is? Do we not want to admit it? Is it controversial?

What is important? Perhaps human rights? Abuse? Fraud? Are these issues to big or too deep for us to address? Or too controversial to talk about? Or too close to home to admit? Family is important, or is that too benign, or too old school, old generation. Does family value change over time? Or does this start to infringe on religious issues, which are excluded in cultural etiquette.

What about science? It can be mentioned, but only by way of amusement or excitement, not technical content. That’s too boring, by definition. What about work? Or are we so disenchanted with it that we’d rather ignore it once we leave the workplace? What about thinking? On second thought, I’ve done enough for today. I think I’m ready for a glass of fine wine.
